Corazón Salado: A journey to protect the ancestral waters of the Kawesqar people.

Summary:
In Patagonia’s Film “Corazón Salado”, surfer and environmental activist Ramón Navarro joins the Kawésqar people, an indigenous community stripped of their nomadic tradition during the colonisation of Patagonia, in the struggle to protect their ancestral territory and waters. The salmon industry, which penetrates deeper and deeper into the region, pollutes and destroys this delicate ecosystem. On this journey, Navarro connects with Leticia Caro and her father, don Reinaldo, members of the Kawésqar community “Grupos Familiares Nómades del Mar”, who reveal the harmful effects of salmon farming and the urgency to convert the waters of the current Kawésqar National Reserve into a National Park. As they navigate, they will find common ground in their love for the sea. Let’s protect the Kawésqar territory forever.

INDEX

1. In the marine waters of the Northwest, these orca whales prey exclusively on fish—and not just any fish: salmon, and preferentially Chinook, the biggest salmon in the Pacific. In this, these orcas (sometimes called Southern Residents) have plenty in common with some of the other longtime native residents of this place: the Lummi Nation.

2. In the Lummi language, the local orcas are called Qwe ‘lhol mechen.

3. When the Lummi first came to this Douglas fir and cedar cloaked land and its glacially carved bays and inlets, the Southern Residents were here to greet them.
