For a new aquaculture law without salmon farms in Protected Areas

Grantee: Defendamos Chiloé
Grant Amount: USD 12,000
Duration: One Year

Chile is currently the second largest exporter of salmon in the world and the national salmon industry is the second largest export sector in the country.

There are currently about 1,407 salmon farming concessions in Chile, 29.7% of which (416) are located within protected areas (national parks, national reserves, marine protected areas, and nature sanctuaries).

Although Chile has the largest protected marine area in Latin America (42%), salmon farming centres continue to operate in and near protected areas in the Chilean Patagonia. To the above list must be added 249 concessions in process, i.e., that have not been granted but are under evaluation, 83 of them in protected areas.

Defendamos Chiloé aims to create a communications campaign “For a new aquaculture law WITHOUT SALMON FARMS IN PROTECTED AREAS” seeking the effective conservation of the categories of protection in the protected areas of Chilean Patagonia.
