Application process
1
PROJECTS
This grant supports initiatives that directly address open net salmon farming through a comprehensive approach, involving a coordinated and diverse range of activities aligned with a clear strategic goal. Projects must aim for medium- to long-term impact and be implemented within a year.
When to apply
Applications can be submitted twice a year when the GSFR Team announces that the Grant Programme for Projects is open.
2
EMERGENCIES
This grant funds urgent efforts to challenge open net salmon farming. An initiative is considered an emergency when an unexpected situation arises and requires quick action in order to achieve the goal of taking salmon farms out of the ocean or halting the industry. The grant must be implemented within 4 months.
When to apply
Applications for emergency grants are accepted on a rolling basis and may be submitted at any time. Please note that all applications are reviewed by the GSFR team, and funding decisions are subject to both the outcome of this review and the availability of GSFR funds.
3
DIRECT INVITATION
Year-round, the GSFR Team reviews opportunities and seeks out projects aligned with our strategic pillars. If your organisation is identified as a good match, you will be invited to submit a grant application.
If you are awarded a grant through a Direct Invitation, you may later be eligible to apply for re-grants or to access additional, successive funding opportunities. If you have a project in mind that you believe has strong impact potential, please feel free to contact us and share more
about it.
Exception: In these cases, applicants do not need to be GSFR members to access funding.

FAQ
What can be funded by the GSFR?
Communication campaigns, activism, awareness, research, legal and advocacy concrete projects to free the oceans from open net salmon farms and prevent its environmental, social, and economic dreadful consequences.
What can't be funded by the GSFR?
The GSFR grants cannot be used to fund operational expenses of NGOs or individuals, including wages, rent, or other personal expenses, nor can they be used to purchase equipment.
In addition, we do not fund projects or actions aimed at other types of salmon farms, such as land-based or closed-containment systems, as our mission is to remove open-net pens from the water.
Who is eligible for a grant?
What qualifies as an emergency?
We consider a situation urgent or emergency-level when it involves immediate risk or high-impact developments. Examples include:
- A new law or regulation favoring the salmon farming industry is about to be approved
- There is an imminent threat of industry expansion in a specific region
- An existing policy that regulates the salmon farming industry is at risk of being weakened or modified to benefit the industry
*The action or project is executed immediately and must end within 4 months. If there is an emergency that requires immediate action but lasts longer than 4 months, contact the GSFR team and explain the situation briefly.
When do I have to send the grant request?
Every type of grant follows its own application process. You can view them here
If I was already given a grant by the GSFR, can I apply again?
Yes, you can apply again, as long as the previous grant is finished. If the year since the giving of the grant isn’t over, but the campaign is, you can submit your report beforehand, in order to end the grant process. Then, you can apply for the new grant.
